Defensive Public Disclosure Statement

This document represents a dated public disclosure of an invention developed by Conner Kupferberg and assigned to Kupferberg IP Holdings LLC. A United States provisional patent application covering this chemical process has been filed. The technical substance is published here on the open record as definitive prior art against later filers.

Non-wood agricultural black liquor (wheat straw, rice straw, bagasse) is sulfur-free when produced by mild alkaline soda routes, but precipitated crude lignin is typically heterogeneous, ash-laden, and polydisperse. The prevailing industrial solution is chemical modification with toxic alkoxides (oxypropylation). This disclosure establishes a two-stage physical pressurized fractionation process that preserves native hydroxyl chemistry while isolating reactive aromatic polyols and hard-carbon sodium battery anode precursors.

Two-Stage Isolation & Co-Product Split

Stage 1: Acid Precipitation & Washing
Acidify sulfur-free black liquor to ~pH 2 using sulfuric acid; wash cake to low conductivity (<100 µS/cm); dry crude lignin cake.
Stage 2: Pressurized Aqueous-Alcohol Extraction
Autoclave extraction in 50–70% aqueous ethanol/methanol at ~150 °C under autogenous pressure for 60 minutes. Controlled cooling hold at 60 °C with static filtration.
Fractional Split:
• Fraction A (Filtrate): Low-polydispersity aromatic polyol (hydroxyl # 300–450 mg KOH/g) → Polyurethane adhesives.
• Fraction B (Filter Cake): High molecular-weight insolubles → Hard-carbon sodium battery anode feedstock.
